About Me

product

As an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker and Career Counsellor, I offer a unique blend of skills and experience to help you whether you are seeking more peace and tranquility in your inner world, more satisfying relationships or assistance with career planning and development.

Counselling with me will assist you to identify what is holding you back from living the life you want and achieving your life/work goals.  It will also help you decide what you can and cannot change and what options are available.

My Background

Returning to study as a mature student changed my life.  I discovered that I had abilities which I had not had the opportunity to explore previously. Qualifying for university opened up a new world of learning and personal discovery for me.   Working and studying part time, I obtained my B.A. and then went on to complete my Social Work Degree.  Over the next 20 years I worked in vocational rehabilitation, assisting people with physical and psychological disabilities to overcome their barriers and find greater satisfaction and independence through employment.  People with disabilities taught me a lot about courage and resilience and this has shaped my view of the world in many ways.  In 2005 I commenced my own private practice, where I specialise in mental health and wellbeing and helping people make changes and choices in life and work.

My Philosophy

It is my belief that people are able to change throughout their lives and that we all have strengths and inner resources which we can draw on in difficult times.  It is often during the times when we are most challenged by life that we can learn and grow and discover new things about ourselves which can lead to personal change and greater satisfaction in life.

My Approach and Theoretical Framework

I will listen carefully as you tell me what brings you to counselling, your hopes and what changes you wish to make in your life or career.

I may ask you to complete some assessments relating to your mood and stress level, or to identify your work skills and strengths

We would then agree on the most suitable approach for you and discuss the frequency and number of sessions you require.

At each session we will review your progress and I will seek your feedback on how well I am meeting your needs. This enables me to adapt my approach if necessary to ensure the sessions are relevant and effective.

My aim is to gain your trust and engage and support you in the counselling process so that together we can reach a point where you feel you have achieved what you want in your life or work, or have the ability to pursue this independently.

I draw on a range of counselling theories and techniques which are chosen to meet your specific situation and needs. These may include :

  • Narrative Therapy

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

  • Solution Focused Brief Therapy

  • Trauma Therapy

  • Mindfulness techniques

  • Relaxation strategies

  • Career Development Theory

  • Brain science knowledge

My Commitment to Professional Development and Quality Service

I undertake regular professional development activities to ensure that I am up to date with the latest thinking in my field. I also participate in monthlyl supervision sessions to reflect on my practice. My work is conducted in accordance with the Code of Ethics and standards of my professional associations.
